Lightweight broswer for centos 6.8

Post by rockabilly » 2018/12/16 16:06:27

Hi guys,
first sorry for my poor English.

I've searched about the possibility of using minimal broswer like "midori" or "dillo", but seems that none
of the lightweight broswer compiled binary is avaible for centos 6.8;

i've tried with
yum -y install midori
yum -y install dillo

but seems there are dependencies not avaible.

Maybe i'm missing something ?

Could someone suggest lightweight broswer avaible from yum ? or should i recompile some from zero ?
If i'm forced to recompile somthing, is there some tutorial online ? I'm not sure about what dev tool i also i have to install (gcc ? make ? whatever?)

Thanks for any suggestion, i'm barely newbie .

If you're really running CentOS 6.8 then, yes, you're missing two and a half years of security and other patches. You should run yum update to get on to 6.10 and up to date.

You can find midori in the nux-dextop third party yum repo.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Centos 6.8 is sure outdated, but this is what i've from my vps provider.

I'm a newbie that is only testing to learn something in centos; i'm glad to you, now i've midori.
But there are also any alternative light broswer in other repository ?

Maybe qupzilla broswer, vivaldi or other idea ? how i can the precise package name of a broswer ? and then in which way
i can check if that broswer is avaible in which repo ?

You are presumably interested in keeping it safe? There are high severity security vulnerabilities in 6.8 that mean it should not be exposed to the internet without being patched. If you do not know if you can do this then you should contact your provider and ask. Updating a real CentOS system is as simple as running yum update.

If your VPS provider says they only support CentOS 6.8, and not any updates, then my advice is to find another VPS provider. Find one with a clue.

My experience with a provider that didn't understand CentOS versions was not good. Eventually, they shut down my VPS after claiming that they notified me several months in advance. They did not notify me. I checked all my email, including SPAM folders. I only discovered the planned shutdown when the the reverse DNS started failing.
