HP EliteBook 840 G1 does not resume from suspend

Post by dleclair » 2014/04/13 15:39:50

My HP EliteBook 840 G1 refuses to resume from suspend. When I press the power button to turn it back on after suspend, I hear the hard drive spin up and the keyboard back light turns on but the screen remains blank. I'm guessing the machine is waking up ok but something goes wrong with the video leaving me without a working screen and my only option then is to do a hard power down.

On a somewhat related note, I've set my power management options to ask me what to do (shutdown, suspend, hibernate, etc...) when I press the power button but that doesn't work at all. Nothing happens at all when I press the power button unless I hold it down for several seconds in which case the computer powers down.

Similarly, the options to Hibernate and Suspend remain grayed out on my XFCE menu bar. As such, the only way I can trigger the hiberate and suspend sequences is by the command line (i.e. 'pm_suspend', and 'pm_hibernate').

Other than the fact that I can only initiate a hibernate from the pm_hibernate command, the hibernate behavior itself seems to work fine, including the resume from hibernate.

I cleared the dmesg ring before attempting a suspend and then looked at it again after rebooting from the failure (i.e. failed resume, forced power down, then power back up). I noticed an error in the dmesg shown here. I'm guessing that this occurred during the resume attempt but I'm not sure. I'll include the complete dmesg lower in the e-mail for your reference.

error message found in dmesg: http://pastebin.centos.org/8851/

Here is some additional information for reference

Do you have the issue only with kernel-ml? Or the same happens with the distro kernel?

I'm now running the distro kernel:

Code: Select all

[dleclair@dleclair-lptp ~]$ uname -r
2.6.32-431.11.2.el6.x86_64
[dleclair@dleclair-lptp ~]$
and the behavior is the same.

However, the error in dmesg is slightly different this time:

Code: Select all

OTOH, you might run into this bug:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1098507

/etc/rc.local:

Code: Select all

# kacpid 100% # bz1098507
echo disable > /sys/firmware/acpi/interrupts/gpe0E
