install of 6.5 results in screen looking like snow

Post by billtepe » 2015/06/03 21:26:13

I am new to linux. I just installed CentOS 6.5. The install went fine... no problems. When I did the reboot, my screen is full of very small dots that resemble a snow pattern on an old television. Any ideas? It's an AMD mother board with onboard video card.

I had earlier installed (on the same computer) CentOS 7 and this was not a problem.

When I did the 6.5 install I told it to delete everything on the disk so I could start from new.

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

Bill

6.5 is old and unsupported.
Run 'yum update' to update to the current 6.6 and see if the problem goes away.

To boot in command line only mode, interrupt the boot process when you see the "Booting CentOS 2.6.... in X seconds" by pressing Esc. Hit 'e' to edit the current kernel command line, scroll to the line that says "kernel" and hit 'e' again then append a space followed by the digit 3 to the end of the line, press enter then hit 'b' to boot. You may also need to append the word nomodeset as well. Once logged in as root in command line only mode, run yum update to get yourself to 6.6 and see if the problem is fixed.

It may just be that you need nomodeset...
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.
