SSD partition alignment issue

Post by taylorkh » 2015/12/10 20:18:35

I created an encrypted, ext4 partition using all available space on a 240 GB SSD using the Disk Utility tool. It seemed to work fine and I was able to mount the partition and copy data to it. After rebooting the machine I received the following warning when examining the disk in Disk Utility

Code: Select all

SSD The partition is misaligned by 512 bytes. This may result in very poor performance. Repartitioning is suggested.
I recall similar concerns years back when 2GB+ mechanical drives first hit the market. Is this a valid warning? Do I need to create the partition manually with fdisk? I have created encrypted partitions before by hand. Never tried it with Disk Utility. Suggestions?

TIA,

Ken

Whatever the reason - I recreated the partition with fdisk and formatted with Disk Utility. No more warning message. I would consider submitting a bug against Disk Utility. However, it is so out of date and obsolete that it is not worth the time.
