Post by mmpl » 2016/04/01 12:07:59

Hi I recently purchased a dell altitude 3450 Ci5 5th Generation laptop. I have installed Centos 6.5, however the system is not able to detect the wifi while booting.

can someone please help with the same. Let me know if you need additional info

You should not be installing 6.5. It has many exploits, and is missing some of the most recent drivers.
Install 6.7. If wifi is still not found, check for drivers at elrepo.org

If you wish to use this notebook whith CentOS, better to install CentOS 7. Because the kernel you must have at least version 3.13:

Except that Redhat have backported major chunks of iwlwifi from newer kernels to the CentOS 6 2.6.32 one so the 3.13 kernel requirement is not true.

OP: please post the output from lspci -nn | grep -i net so that we can see the PCI Vendor and device ids for your wireless chipset. With those we can see if the card is supported out of the box with CentOS 6.7.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

According to the specification, in this laptop can be two versions of:
1. Intel 7265 2x2 dual band 802.11 AGN with BT Combo Card;
2. Dell Wireless 1707 1x1 single band 802.11n + BT 4.0 (Early 2015).

There are lots of Intel 7265 cards supported by iwlwifi in CentOS 6's 2.6.32-573.22.1.el6 kernel. Without the lspci -nn output we do not know if the OP's is one of them.

Most of the people in my organisation are using, centos 6.5, hence so far we have not been very keep on using centos 6.7 or 7.They have been using the same on a Ci3 system. This time we have decided to go for ci5. Do you have any suggestions what laptop is most suitable for centos 6.5? what is the criteria for the same? i have to buy 10 laptops. dell employee's cannot make a suggestion as they are not testing their hardware on centos and hence cannot extend support.

6.5 is NOT supported. Use 6.7.

6.7 is just 6.5 plus updates. You need to be on it as there are several really high severity security vulnerabilities in 6.5 that are and will remain unfixed without the update to 6.7. Just yum update and get yourself to 6.7 and see if the wifi card is detected - hardware support is one of the things that is added with a new point release and I have checked on a 6.7 system and numerous Intel cards have been added since 6.5.
