Hardware upgrade, now can't install Centos6

Post by bphillips » 2017/12/12 17:53:43

I am using FreePBX 13 which uses Centos 6. I recently upgraded my hardware on my server and am now unable to install FreePBX or Centos. However, I am able to install Ubuntu.

The install hangs every time at the same spot, the last line on the screen says

[<ffffffff8100c200>] ? child_rip+0x0/0x20

I have successfully installed Ubuntu Server 16.04.3 LTS as a test as well as Windows 8.1. While I had Windows installed I installed drivers from the Motherboard disc.

The computer is connected to the internet and I did a successful ping test while in Ubuntu Server.

Computer hardware specs:
Intel Core i3-7100 Kaby Lake Dual-Core 3.9 GHz LGA 1151
Team Elite Plus 4GB 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2133
ASUS H110M-E/M.2 LGA 1151 Intel H110 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 Micro ATX Motherboard
WD Blue 250GB Internal SSD Solid State Drive - SATA 6Gb/s 2.5 Inch

I also tried with the ASUS H110M-E/M.2 LGA 1151 and a Intel Core i7-7700K Kaby Lake Quad-Core 4.2 GHz. that didn't work either.

I then replaced the motherboard with a GIGABYTE GA-H110M-S2H LGA1151 Intel H110 Micro ATX DDR4 and used the Core i3 CPU listed above. Same issue with that as well.

Any idea how to get around this?

What media are you using for the install? Usb stick? DVD? See http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey

Did you check the sha256sum of your downloaded iso image file against the list in the release notes? https://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I think my issue is my Kaby Lake generation Intel CPU. Based on my research, Centos 6.6 only supports up to Haswell.

If you are installing from an USB stick, chances are that you have used an application that corrupts the installation media. This occurs far too often. Plain old dd works best. You should also try with 6.9 as that's more than two years newer than 6.6. You can also test the install media on some other (older) computer to see if the problem is with the install media or the server.

I was using a disc from an .iso to install.

My problem is the version of FreePBX I'm using is Centos 6.6. The install for FreePBX includes Centos.

I tested the install of just Centos 6.9 on the server and it also failed. However, Centos 7 installed.

FreePBX 14 runs on Centos 7. So, at this point, I'm waiting for a good way to upgrade from FreePBX 13 to FreePBX 14 so I can run Centos 7. I've reverted to my old hardware until then.

Thanks,
