CentOS 6.2 audio and video playback are slightly too fast or skippy

Post by pianodreamer » 2012/01/17 05:30:05

Hello,

I just installed CentOS 6.2 on an older machine.

When I play videos in totem, the audio and video are synced, but slightly too fast and the audio is pitch shifted up. If if play the same file in VLC, the video is smoth, and the audio has no pitch shift, but every couple of seconds it will cut out for a fraction of a second.

I did some googling, and found some bug reports for fedora describing similar behavior with the same sound card that I have, but a different kernel.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=496119
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=441087

As per this suggestion: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=441087#c17 I created a file /etc/modprobe.conf in gedit and added the following text:
options snd_intel8x0 ac97_clock=48000
I restarted my computer, and now there is no skipping in vlc or totem, but the playback is slow and the audio is pitch shifted down.

At this point I've run out of ideas. Anyone else have any?

You might want to try the ELRepo kmod-alsa drivers and/or xorg-x11-drv-intel.

I notice you have multiple 3rd part repos installed, but fortunately EPEL is not enabled along with RPMforge. You may want to consider using the yum priorities plugin.
