Thanks for catching that. :oops:

After correction, restarting "autofs" shows the following in messages:

Jan  2 07:55:37 localhost automount[6745]: umount_autofs_indirect: ask umount returned busy /mnt/xl1b4
Jan  2 07:55:42 localhost automount[7461]: lookup_read_master: lookup(nisplus): couldn't locate nis+ table auto.master

Autofs needs to control the entire directory /mnt/xl1b4 so there should be nothing inside it and nothing mounted on it now.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
Info for USB installs on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey
CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

:oops: 15 is for the nas, 13 is the CentOS server.
All appears to work with that correction.
