WIFI only connects on one user account (Dell Latitude)

Post by innstar » 2015/03/12 20:12:14

Hi - so after a month of smooth sailing with CentOS 6 on my Dell Latitude D630, I suddenly stopped seeing a wifi connection capability on my user account. On my partner's user account, it still connects fine. On my user account, there is no wifi symbol in the tray (even a disconnected one). This was after a reboot of the system. Yesterday, I had installed SANE and Xsane and turned on the wireless connection to my printer/scanner to see if I could scan a document which is the most change the machine has seen outside of system updates (which I also installed yesterday). I'm not sure what else info y'all might need, but if you can help, I'd much appreciate it! Thanks.

Each user has their own wireless profile.
Run System->Preferences->Network Connections.

Thanks for quick reply. I already checked all of that and the network profile for my wireless is still the same as it was before (and same as the prof in my partner's acct). There is still no wifi icon in the top tray where it was before reboot. And I mean specifically that there is no icon - not just no connectivity. No option to view wireless networks, connect/disconnect, any of that. It just vanished. Is there a way to activate and deactivate the wireless card per user, that might make that disappear? I'm worried that a part of the installation of the programs I did changed something internally w/r/t my wireless connection and it needs to be changed back.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.
My laptop is running C5. My C6 and C7 machines have no wifi.

Go to System->Preferences->Startup Applications and see if Network Manager is checked.

Hi, yes, it is checked.

I also discovered another issue: typically, after we hibernate the computer, it will ask for the root password upon waking to unlock the Network Manager applet and allow it to run. Now, when we wake the computer from hibernation, it just continually asks over and over and over again no matter how many times I put the password in (the password is correct, it works in terminal just fine). When I start the computer fresh from reboot, or awaken from sleep mode, the internet works fine. But when starting from hibernation, something goes wrong. Not sure if this is helpful but just in case.

I briefly tried to reproduce this on a Dell E6500 but without success. If I get a chance later and no one has answered the question I'll try again.
