You should not run 6.5 as it's old and unsupported and has unfixed security vulnerabilities. Running yum update will bring you up to 6.7 which is the latest version. For the squid question you probably need to follow their wiki entry http://wiki.squid-cache.org/SquidFaq/ClearingTheCache
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
