CentOS 6.9 And openvSwitch

Post by etpoole60 » 2017/11/21 21:36:55

I'm pretty sure that the use of openvswitch is not required, but I could stand to learn some things about networking and smart switches.

My environment consists of 4 machines all running CentOS 6.9 x86_64. Three of the machines are running 6 KVM virtual machines each. The fourth machine is where the virt-manager is run so I can do what I need to do from a single location. All of the VM have their qcow files built on the same NFS mounted file system but I haven't implemented VM migration. For networking I use the standard KVM method along with a hosts file copied to all 4 machines.

I have attempted to build openvswitch based on several instructions found on the internet, but without success.

One question is is there a yum repository that can be used to do a standard install like other packages?
If I must build, is there a set of instructions that don't require obscure editing and will use kernel 2.6.32-696.16.1.el6.x86_64?

PUIAS (now called springdale linux) offers openvswitch as rpm packages. It is a reputable repository and is supposed to be compatible with CentOS. However, openvswitch is not something I have used myself, so just a suggestion for you to try.

I checked the repositories listed for PU_IAS software and found openvswitch under the computational repository.

I'm in the process of installing and testing.
Get back to you real soon!

Performed a standard yum -y install openvswitch kmod-openvswitch and all went well.

I'll start configuring and testing on 11/22.

I'll post my results soon after.
