Boot in command line only mode or use Ctrl-Alt-F2 to switch to a different VT so you can login at the command line. Check your logs for errors, I'd still guess video drivers so start with /var/log/Xorg.0.log
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Sorry for the late reply, I hadn't seen that your answer was on a new page. I attached the Xorg.0.log from the last boot because I don't know what should I pay attention to ...

[ 20.897] (WW) intel(0): Unknown chipset
[ 20.897] (II) UnloadModule: "intel"
[ 20.897] (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
This looks to be the source of the problem, it's an unsupported video adapter. From a previous line, it says the device is

[ 20.886] (--) PCI:*(0:0:2:0) 8086:591b:1028:07bf rev 4, Mem @ 0xeb000000/16777216, 0xa0000000/268435456, I/O @ 0x0000f000/64, BIOS @ 0x????????/131072

but my /usr/share/hwdata/pci.ids does not list an intel device with a device id of 591b, the nearest is a 5910 which is listed as a Xeon E3-1200 v6 video adapter.

Interestingly, running grep -i 8086 /lib/modules/3.10.0-693.11.1.el7.x86_64/modules.* | grep -i 591b on the CentOS kernel, it does list that device as supported. Try that on your ELRepo kernel instead and see if that says anything.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Here's the output of the command. I used $(uname -r) to use the correct kernel number.

According to http://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/precisio ... _en-us.pdf, Table 11, Video:
this computer comes with the following:
Discrete:
• NVIDIA Quadro M1200 / 4 GB GDDR5
Integrated:
• Intel HD Graphics 630/P630 with 7th Generation processors
• Intel HD Graphics 530 with 6th Generation processors

The Dell support site has available for download for RHEL 7.3: NVIDIA Quadro Graphics Driver 367.44 for RHEL7.3

Perhaps you should try to install the proprietary NVidia driver.

Thank you for the suggestion. I have two questions :

1- If I understand correctly, the links are for RHEL 7.x whereas I have 6.9, would it still work?
2- In the other thread that I quoted earlier (viewtopic.php?f=13&t=3119&start=10), it is mentioned to download the kmod-nvidia driver package, would it make better sense?

[EDIT 01]
Before installing any driver, I installed the nvidia-detect utility (http://elrepo.org/tiki/nvidia-detect) and it says that I have no NVidia devices on my computer.

[EDIT 02]
With some further research, I found out that my CPU is an Intel Core i5-7740HQ, and the Intel documentation associated to it say it comes with the Intel HD Graphics 630, which confirms what pjsr2 said. Someone on the forum seems to have handled the problem (viewtopic.php?f=49&t=64780&p=272416), any ideas about it?

The links I provided are for 7.x indeed. Neither Dell nor RedHat mention 6.9. (RHEL 6.9 has reached the stage in its life cycle where support for newer hardware is added restrictively.) The fact that Dell provides the RHEL 7.3 driver at least indicates that it should be possible to get this laptop to work.

When you use the kernel-ml-4.14 kernel, you cannot install the kmod-nvidia packages from ElRepo. These are created for the normal CentOS kernels.
You will have to download the driver package from NVidia and run the scripts that come with it to build your own driver. Building the driver will require that you install at least the kernel-ml-headers package. Not sure if you need to install some of the other kernel-ml packages as well. It is a long time ago that I did build my own NVidia driver this way.

Assuming your system has both discrete and integrated video, is there some bios setting related to this? I don't have experience with that, but the links in the RedHat article suggests that you may need to help the kernel with some options on selection of the video driver. It could be that without these options the X server has problems to figure out what it should do and you therefor are facing problems to start the X server with the Intel driver.

Good news, using the previous link I mentioned (viewtopic.php?f=49&t=64780&p=272416) I managed to create the driver for the Intel HD Graphics 630. Now the new kernel seems to be fully functional (by the way I also had a problem with my sound board and it was also solved).

This leads back to the original problem: The Wi-Fi driver. Even with the iwlwifi-8265-22.ucode file copied in the /lib/firmware, nothing happens.

And second good news: The Wi-Fi works now!

There was actually no problem with the iwlwifi installation, everything went fine. After that, I was able to see the 'wlan0' interface with ifconfig but I couldn't see or connect to any hotspot. After running 'iwlist wlan0 scanning', it returned 'wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down'. So yes, the solution was that simple : wi-fi was not activated. There was no LED or other idicator on the screen or on the keyboard to figure this out in another way.

So now everything seems to work fine. I will reboot my computer to start again clean but I think the problem is now solved!

Thank you TrevorH and pjsr2 for your time and helpful advice!
