Centos 6.9 compatibility with Lenovo ThinkSystem

Post by taiku16 » 2018/03/08 11:03:22

from Lenovo OSIG site, Lenovo SR530 supports RHEL 6.9, so I guess this server can also run Centos 6.9 as well...

however, after trying both the minimal and full ISO of Centos 6.9, I still cannot get the network ports running...

I have already upgraded the Intel XL710 driver (which supports RHEL 6.9 x64) to the latest version, but sill I cant see the ports RUNNING status, they only indicate UP, BROADCAST, MULTICAST...VLAN access of the switchports I used are correct, because I confirmed it using another machine.

all LAN ports are also enabled in UEFI, and have confirmed the new driver was loaded by the kernel...

anyone has the same issue with a Lenovo server? thanks for any input :)

My first question would be, why use CentOS 6 for a new install? It's already in what's known as Production Phase 3 where only security bugs marked as "Critical" get fixed and anything less severe is down to Redhat to fix if they feel like it (which they sometimes do and sometimes don't). It has around 2 years of life left before it goes EOL completely and there are no more updates to it.

What is the output from lspci -nn | grep -i net ? Is there anything logged in /var/log/messages? What exactly did you "upgrade" in terms of the driver and where from?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

hi TrevorH, thanks for the reply...im fortunate to be upgrading to Centos 6, i just started last year, for the longest time the company has been using Centos 5! haha...obviously, they are not prepared to move to Centos 7 yet, since we just follow/align with the Japan parent company standard, which is Centos 6..we are not an IT outfit anyway, we are electronics R&D, most applications are compliant to RHEL/CentOS 5/6/7...so much for the intro...:)

re: the Intel XL710 CNA driver (i40e), I updated from the stock to the latest version that can be downloaded from Intel..

here is the output of lspci:

5a:00.2 Ethernet controller [0200]: Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection X722 for 1GbE [8086:37d1] (rev 09)
