Internet available but machine not visible on the network map

Hello all.

I installed CentOS 6 on a desktop computer.
Internet is working fine, but this machine is
not visible on the network map of our building
while the other computer with Linux Mint
(Ubuntu) family is working fine.
I checked resolv.conf and found no difference
between these two.
(Even my laptop connected to our building
network system with wireless is visible on the
network map.)

Is there anything more I have to do for proper
network setup? This machine is connected with
a network cable via router.

Thank you all in advance of your help.

What is a "network map"?

What I referred to as "network map" is simply the content of the window
showing the computers connected to the network in which your computer
is connected to.

This could be seen when you click "Network" icon on the left vertical pane
of your file manager or file browser window.

If I install Samba, other computers are visible on the Network map,
but still, my computer does not show up on the network map.

Are you running Samba services? If not you can't expect to see the system via Windows network protocols.

Yes, I installed Samba and running.
After that, other computers on the network are visible
on this machine, but from other computers, this machine
is not visible. Some of them are Windows and others are
Linux. That is, even from other Linux machines, this
computer (CentOS 6 with Samba running) is invisible.

Perhaps a firewall issue? Can you access it with smbclient from other systems?

I thought of that, too, so turned off the whole firewall
but still was not visible from other computers while
they were visible on this CentOS machine.

Are you sure the services are running? Try testparm on the server, and "smbclient -L hostname" on the server locally, and from other systems.

In order to see the Linux box in the network it has to be:

1) Pingable
2) the PC viewing the network have to have Netbios over TCP/IP enabled
3) if you are running and AD domain, you will have to join Linux box to the domain (google this, not hard just a little tedious to set up)

Why is it important to be in the network browse view? It does not add any real value.
