[SOLVED] After locking screen - moving mouse disables screen-lock

Post by warron.french » 2016/04/27 18:57:21

Hello, I thought I had configured the 7 fabled systems, all running CentOS-6.7 with kernel-2.6.32-573.22.1, I am working on to enable a screen lock. I am sorry, but I do not remember how I did it since it was several months ago (nearly a year).

Anyway, here is the scenario:
I choose one of 2 possible methods from below to lock the system...
Method1: On the keyboard hit [CTRL]-[ALT]-[l] , or
Method2: Using the mouse click on the user name in the upper right hand corner of the GDM Desktop, and select the option for Lock Screen.

If I move the mouse, 5 seconds or 5 days later it doesn't matter, the screen automatically unlocks.

Can someone point me to a validated set of configuration steps for purposely configuring the Screen Lock feature on the GUI GDM Desktop please?

just a couple thoughts - 1) Account has a password? 2) Account does not auto-login? The password is actually the "lock"

Hi lightman, yes the account has a password, no it does not auto-login.

Sorry - was just a shot. I don't use 6 any more and don't really remember ... anything in Settings (Power, Display, Privacy) perhaps dealing with the screen lock?

- out of ideas.

Is it true that the root account's screen cannot be locked by the process I described in the initial post?

Someone told me you can't lock the screen for root - which seems silly to me.

If this is the case, then I no longer have a problem. I tested a different local account - wsf29221 - and the screen lock approach worked with no hassles or issues at all.

I suspect because you wouldn't regularly be running as root. {just guessing}

That's correct, root can't be locked out. Normally you shouldn't be running a graphical session as root, so it ought not to be an issue! If you open up the screensaver preferences as root you will see a warning that the screen will not be locked for the root user. I've been trying to attach an image (without success), if you run the command

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/gnome-screensaver-preferences
as root and as an ordinary user you'll see what I mean.
