Centos 5 web browser that works

Post by skyler440 » 2014/11/15 14:37:34

I finally put a desktop environment on my machine (KDE), and found the default browser konquerer. This browser however does not support many pages including google drive and complex HTML websites.

I have tried to install chromium and firefox without luck, there is always some error in the terminal when I am trying to install it. Here is the output when I tried to install chrome recently:

Error: google-chrome-stable conflicts with libX11
Error: Missing Dependency: libgio-2.0.so.0 is needed by package google-chrome-stable-38.0.2125.122-1.i386 (google)

You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
You could try running: package-cleanup --problems
package-cleanup --dupes
rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest

Does anybody know of a good web browser, firefox and chrome quality, which will work on CentOS 5?

Thanks for the help, i'm a beginner at linux here, and haven't really used command line before.

Yes, firefox-31.2.0-3.el5.centos.x86_64 is in the CentOS repos already. Just yum install firefox
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

(I'm not sure if the warnings at the top are anything to worry about, nor whether it's a problem that I've got several versions of repo listed... CentOS/RHEL novice here....)

Thanks

As Trevor said, yum install firefox, not yum update firefox. You can't update it if you don't have it installed.

Please check all your repo files in /etc/yum.repos.d. You have enabled all the repos from the Vault which are not meant to be enabled by default and you should disable them again. Those are usually defined in CentOS-Vault.repo and all of them should be disabled by default. Doing that should get rid of all those repos listed that start with C5....

Once you've done that, edit /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo and make sure that there are no paths hardcoded into the mirrorlist and/or baseurl= lines there. They should refer to locations such as

Code: Select all

baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/$releasever/os/$basearch/
That $releasever should not be a hard coded release number like 5.7!

You might also check to see if you have a CentOS-Base.repo.rpmnew containing the correct repo definitions since I notice that yours is referring to the 'addons' repo that hasn't existed for several years.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Thanks, TrevorH.

The repo definitions were indeed the problem. Having got pointed in the right direction by you, I cleaned up my repo files, then additionally browsed around on mirror.centos.org and found a line in a readme that said, "For normal users, you should use /5/ and not /5.7/ in your path," because it always contains the latest .x releases of everything. That made all the difference, since the Firefox update happened after the .7 release.

Cheers!

You should not have /5/ in your repo files, you should have $releasever which yum resolves internally to /5/.
