gnome desktop icons disappeared

Post by demonoid » 2008/07/03 21:32:34

Hello,

When I started my computer today, my gnome desktop icons had disappeared. As far as I can recall, I hadn't changed any settings. When I right click on the desktop, the context menu doesn't appear either. But the desktop wallpaper remains intact.

How can I resolve this?

gnome desktop icons disappeared

Hi,

I don't know if this will be much help but my suspicion is that nautilus is not running. Can you open up a terminal? If so type "nautilus" (without the quotes) and hit return. That should restore your icons and access to your background menus. Then kill the process (eg. cntl-c). Nautilus should automatically restart. If this happens with no errors then everything should start up OK when you log in again.

By the way, does this happen on all user accounts or just one?

Cheers,

Tried running nautilus command and then terminating it; not working. The icons appear only after next reboot.

The same problem happened to me after I installed the kmod-nvidia driver from elrepo.

When I right click a desktop icon, all the desktop icons will go away. Log out and back on will bring back the icons but when right click on the icon all of them will disappear again as before.

I fixed the problem by go to Utilities>Tweak Tool, in the Desktop section turn on "Have file manager handle the desktop". I do not know why this change fix the problem, I got it by pure luck. Hope this helps.

This just happened to me on Centos 7

Use Utilities | Tweak Tools | Desktop and turn Icons on
