Stating the obvious, but "mkdir /var" before rebooting. :-)
I thought, and maybe its a senior moment, that if you are mounted a directory to a partition /dev/sdb1 /var that you did not need to actually create the directory on the new partition.

grr let me test this if this is what it is maybee its time to retire or find a place that still uses Irix LOL.

Your test will reveal that the mountpoint directory must exist. I vaguely remember Irix and find that my rusty SunOS and Vax/VMS skills are very little in demand also. ;-)

I spent 10 years at SGI supporting IRIX. It was the best of the SVR4-based UNIXes, IMO, but I doubt it is being used much any more except for on legacy SGI servers. We have IRIX to thank for XFS, chkconfig and opengl, among other things.

Live and learn - knew about XFS and OpenGL but didn't know/remember chkconfig heritage.

Anyway - @cry4dawn - may not be relevant, but might try the recent selinux-policy updates if you have not already.

It has to be something with the updates. I did a clean install and did not update and used the same steps as above and it works fine.
did another clean install updated via yum did the same steps and it does not work. I have a feeling it has something to do with the selinux update but not sure.

Sounds like it may merit a bug report.

For future reference, a link to your bug report would have been helpful.
