Someone could have told me that CentOS 5.6 just can't run VMware Server.
I need to correct this. It can, I finally got Server to work after wading through a bunch of GUI tangles and error messages.
However, the holdout VM file doesn't run in VMware Server, either. On 32-bit distros, Vmware Workstation was able to get the same OSX VM to run, on 64-bit distros with Server (I don't have any more Workstation licenses... :-) ) - no cigar.

Re: Borked VMware install attempt
Well someone did suggest in post #6 that VMware Server is not a good choice for virtualization on CentOS; OTOH people have used it successfully so "can't work" might be a bit strong. A royal PITA to get working and a dead-end due to EOL may be a more accurate characterization.
Re: Borked VMware install attempt
If you need a free VMware product to play with, try VMware Player instead of the old (ancient?) VMware Server.

Where did that holdout VM originate from? Since Apple is very particular about its firmware and licensing, as far as I'm aware OSX VM's will only run on OSX hosts. This is true for VirtualBox and I expect it to be true for VMware.
