USB Installation question

Post by Shantred » 2011/07/05 18:00:16

Greetings everyone, forgive me for anything that seems overly obvious here as this is my first experience with linux.

I'm trying to install Centos 5.6 onto an old computer I have lying around. I don't have any blank CDs or DVDs to actually burn the iso onto at the moment. So I downloaded the i386 iso and installed it onto my 8GB jump drive using the liveusb creator.

When I boot the computer with the drive plugged in, I get prompted for the graphical or text install. No matter what I seem to do, it only does the text install. So I try to move forward. I select english for language, US keyboard, and then it asks for the media that holds the packages to be installed. Installing from a jump drive, I chose hard drive press F2 and select my jump drive. It asks me to "Select the file which is your driver disk image". From here, I'm lost.

My question is, am I doing this correctly? If so, what file am I looking for for the driver disk image?

I've tried to look for a guide on installing this using the usb, but all I can find is a guide saying how to set up the usb.

Welcome to the CentOS fora. Please see the recommended reading for new users linked in my signature.

The Wiki is your friend. Please see How to Set Up a USB Key to Install CentOS. After installation then you may need to read How To Configure a New Video Card and if more help is needed, How to provide information about your system.

P.S. I see this thread may be obsolete given your new topic Moving Harddrive.

Hi,

I have the same problem with MSI laptop,

1) used latest UNetbootin with USB sandisk 16GB.
not many options : selected centos5.5 i386 dvd iso.
it copied all the rpm to a "CentOS" directory and other files.
UNetbootin said it was ok.

2) boot on USB -> default -> centos install starts

3) can only install from
-CDROM
-HD
-FTP
-HTTP

selected HD, then F2 to select the USB drive /dev/sdb1 then it says

"select the file which is your driver disk image"

I checked the forum, someone said to use HTTP and put in /centos/5.5/os/i386/ but it complains too
http:///centos/5.5/os/i386/

Another threat says need to have the *.iso file and not the unpacked files on the USB, another one says opposite, that it is ok.

So why so many people says UNetbootin method is good ? does it need manual adjustment ?

Thanks very much.
