Hi, today I have tried to access as root to our server Centos 5.5 64b and after typing the password the next message is showed:
'Your home directory is listed as /home/root , but it does not appear to exist'
I can not get access to the server when this happens, I was trying rebooting and trying different things like an hour, but while I have been writing this post this issue has fixed. But I would like to know why this happens.
Regards
root can not login
Re: root can not login
Someone changed it from the default of /root to /home/root but forgot to create the directory.
Next time, boot in single user or emergency mode and fix it from there.

The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Nobody except me can get access to this server, by the way where is the set up you mention?

To get into single user mode you can follow the first part of http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/ResetRootPassword
