Kernel panic booting 5.10 from usb hdd

I have installed 5.10 on an exteral usb hdd & get Kernel panic on boot.
System is:
HP ENVY 15t Quad
Product number: E2E34AV
• Windows 8.1 64
• 4th generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4800MQ Processor
• NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) 840M Graphics with 2048MB of dedicated video memory
• 15.6-inch diagonal Full HD BrightView LED-backlit Display (1920x1080)
• 12GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)

You almost certainly want to use 6.5 on a machine that new.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
Info for USB installs on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey
CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I also had problems attempting to install 6.5 to an internal partition on this machine:

5.10 matches the corporate enterprise distribution so it would be the ideal os to have
