System starts up but doesnt show login screen

Post by pavithrakb » 2015/06/02 13:10:17

Hi..
I'm new to the forum. Don't know how to post the problem.
before 2 months, I centos showed for files to update. After update and restart, it showed starting udev and after that the screen went black.
The login screen was not shown. i read few solutions, and everytime when i start, I interfered the normal login and selected 2 option the grub to load the system and there was no problem.
now i'm facing the same problem. Now selecting the second or thrird option doesn't show the login screen.
after "starting udev" the screen goes blank (see image).
I'm a beginner to linux, so please help.
P.S.
My system had commercials software. So, I cannot format the system and install a new version. At least not till August. so please help to fix the problem.

Have you previously installed proprietary video drivers from e.g nVidia or ATI?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Dear TrevorH. Yes. I have installed nvdia driver lately and then updated the list of recommended updates.

I forgot to mention one thing in the previous post.
in the grub menu, I have 4 options.
After the normal boot up started showing the blank screen, I used 2nd option to select and login in the system.
recently It stopped working.
The below is the thing I forgot to mention earlier.
I selected the third option in the grub and got the login window in which i successfully logged in. (It still works).
But when I open any graphical applications (including web browser), nvdia screen appears and the session automatically logs out.
does this information helps?
whats really wrong with the system? Should I uninstall any drivers? will that fix this problem? please help.

If you install the nvidia drivers using their .run file then you have to reinstall them every time there is a kernel update.

A better solution is to go to ELRepo and grab the right kmod-nvidia for your card - they have an nvidia-detect package that tells you which kmod you need. You'll have to uninstall the copy of the drivers you already have installed and then add ELRepo's elrepo-release package then yum install the right kmod. Those drivers are the same as the ones from nvidia but packed in such a way that they survive a kernel update.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Hi..
Sorry it took so much time.
I chose the working grub and tried to remove nvidia using "yum remove nvidia" but it didn't work.
So, I followed the below steps from viewtopic.php?t=7221
- /sbin/init 3
- ./NVIDIA-linux-x86_64-295.20.run --uninstall
- rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
- restore old initramfs
- reboot

But soon after I enter "/sbin/init 3" the system screen went black.
I restarted the system again and started with - ./NVIDIA-linux-x86_64-295.20.run --uninstall, but the package was not found
So I used "rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf" then the file was removed.
restore old initramfs - (bash: restore : command not found).
i skipped the above and restarted.

My system showed login screen normally. (The main problem is solved). :D :D :D :D :D

I logged in, installed ELRepo and nvidia-detect and then installed nvdia using "yum install $(nvidia-detect)"
The nvidia driver got installed.
I restarted the system.
After udev, I got a fatal error (image attached).
