You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest

You should beware of rpmforge these days as it has received very few, if any, updates in the last 3 years. That means many of its packages are out of date and contain unfixed security vulnerabilities.

What you appear to have there is the old conflict between rpmforge and EPEL where both supply identically named packages with different version numbers and yum will for example pull package A from rpmforge that requires package B but it finds a "newer" version of B in EPEL so it pulls that in but A really requires B from rpmforge and it fails. You need to add exclude= lines to the epel.repo for the ones in question so that it pulls the ones from rpmforge that it needs.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

You put literally "exclude=lines" in your repo file! A) there was a space in my suggestion between exclude= and lines and B) I meant you need to exclude the package names! What you've done there is excluded a package called "lines" from being updated or installed from EPEL which is not exactly useful.

exclude= lines will do precisely nothing useful. I was suggesting that you exclude the conflicting packages which means you need to name them on the exclude= line. And by "exclude= line" I mean the line which contains "exclude=" not literally "exclude= lines" which would a) be pointless and b) would only exclude a package called "lines" if such a package existed.

great, I understood now. I was a newbie. and wanted to move to learn along with AIX.

I knew vlc 0.9 was a very old version. Sorry i tried these steps.

wget http://pkgs.repoforge.org/vlc/vlc-1.1.1 ... x86_64.rpm
751 ls -rlt
752 rpm -ivh vlc-1.1.13-1.el6.rf.x86_64.rpm
wget http://pkgs.repoforge.org/vlc/vlc-1.1.1 ... x86_64.rpm
751 ls -rlt
752 rpm -ivh vlc-1.1.13-1.el6.rf.x86_64.rpm
this too said that it had a lot of dependencies, then
issues this.

yum install vlc-1.1.13-1.el6.rf.x86_64.rpm. automatically resolved all dpendencies and installed.

i will remember add=package names in epel.repo.
