Chances are that those commands will need to be run as root. http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/BecomingRoot has some hints.

Prior to CentOS 6, root had a different path than other users. I have a small page on it
http://home.roadrunner.com/~computertai ... hpath.html

(As did Fedora, prior to Fedora 10--though the page is mostly about Fedora prior to 10, the information is identical for CentOS 5.x)
New users should check the FAQ and Read Me First pages

i have tried it as an su, the same. i even used the #1 disk and it showed installed for bash.
this is inconceiveable for a linux os. i have gone to a more modern machine, more ram and installed 6.5 and everything is working as it should, for now. thanks for ur help.
