2 HDD on CentOS - 1 for backup, 1 for OS

Post by garymarsden » 2010/07/19 08:17:32

Hi,

I need someone to help me out.

I have a CentOS 5.4 installation with 2 Hard Drives [Disk 1 and Disk 2]. I have mounted the Disk 2 as a ext3 partition called /backups within the OS installed in Disk 1 [other partitions on Disk1 include / and SWAP].

I have a CRON job that creates specific backups of Disk 1 onto Disk 2.

This works fine.

My Problem : I wish to move Disk 2 to a New Box on which Iam planning to load the same CentOS 5.4.

My Questions :

1. Will Disk 2 be immediately identified in the new install and I add it as another partition in the new install ?

2. Do I have to perform any specific set of operations to integrate Disk 2 into the new Box ?

3. this kind of migration of a Disk partition contained on a Seperate Hard Disk cannot be migrated to a New install CentOS Box ?

Please help me.

Many thanks.

Gary

You should update to the current/supported release. Obsolete releases are not supported, nor is it advisable to be running them.
See the CentOS 5.5 Release Notes for details. Use 5.5 for the new install.

You should be able to select a Custom partition scheme at installation and mount the disk where you want it. Be careful not to format during the install.
