[SOLVED] System Really Slow

Hoping someone can help me with this issue. The system seems to get slower throughout the day and is actually rebooted nightly at 5am. It seems some of the reports I am running that used to take 15-45 seconds now take 15 minutes. It also seems that disk writing is slower.. i.e. backups that export the database and then gzip it are now pushing 8+ hours when before it was under 1 hour.
The system has 16gb ram (all good and tested)
It is running on VMWare.

Here are some hd tests:

Welcome to the CentOS fora. Please see the recommended reading for new users linked in my signature.

Your post is not clear. What VMware product are you running, and is CentOS the host, guest OS, or both?

In any case, please provide more information about your system by running "./getinfo.sh" and showing us the output file.

If that was meant to be a speed test then you forgot the -tT switches. i.e. `hdparm -tT /dev/sdc`

I am running that now.. well, it has been running for about an hour now. How long should this take? (running getinfo.sh)

thanks

Normally getinfo.sh runs in a few seconds to maybe a minute. Given your symptoms, who knows. Might try "./getinfo.sh basic" for the minimum info, "./getinfo.sh driver" for hardware info, "./getinfo.sh disk" for disk info, etc. At least that might give a clue as to where it is hanging up. You could also edit the script and insert the line "set -x" near the top to track what it is doing.

even basic takes forever.. ill try to run it again in the morning before anyone gets on..
Here is the disk info again though

hdparm -tT /dev/sdc
Timing cached reads: 13888 MB in 2.00 seconds = 6928.14 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 28 MB in 3.03 seconds = 9.23 MB/sec
/dev/sdb:
Timing cached reads: 13928 MB in 2.00 seconds = 6974.23 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 46 MB in 3.10 seconds = 14.82 MB/sec
/dev/sda
Timing cached reads: 14592 MB in 2.00 seconds = 7307.52 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 3.22 seconds = 19.86 MB/sec
Just for some data points - ran "./getinfo.sh basic" on my desktop system and it took < 3 seconds; on a fast server, ~1 second.
For "./getinfo.sh" the (virtualized) desktop took 22 seconds, and on the kick-@$$ server < 5 seconds.

Edit: I see you posted while I was benchmarking. Is there a copy/paste error at the bottom? Seems the services are duplicated.

So we now know the guest is running CentOS, but still not on what VMware product or host OS, nor if the slow performance impacts the host. Any particular reason for running the CentOSplus kernels? As far as I know they offer no advantage on VMware.

For what it's worth, the figures you get from your basic hdparm benchmark are pretty dreadful but not so abysmal as to indicate hardware problems. More likely to be an overloaded VMWare host I suspect.

I inherited this box. There was a copy/paste error, thats why the duplicated lines.

A coworker wrote me:

They need to ensure that the vmware tools are properly installed and they are using the virtual disk driver. This could result in a significant performance lift over the drivers using software emulation
root@XXX:/usr/lib/vmware-tools #ps axwf|grep -i vmware
19777 pts/12 S+ 0:00 \_ grep -i vmware
There should be processes running on the guest and I don't see them.

As for VMWare, we are running 4.1.0

Thanks again, I really appreciate the help.
