HP dl360 gen8 server support

Post by TrevorH » 2012/07/19 18:44:37

Anyone here running CentOS 5.8 on an HP dl360 gen8 server?

We're about to purchase another pair of xen servers at $dayjob and we usually use dl360 servers, have g4, g4p, g5, g6 and g7's in use at the moment, but the gen8's are more powerful and cheaper than the g7's so I'd prefer to get the gen8's if at all possible. Since all our infrastructure is currently based around xen, I don't want to be experimenting with CentOS 6 and KVM just yet, time for that in about 2 or 3 years and then we'll probably just skip C6 and go straight to 7 :-)

Status update: Well, hardware arrived and CentOS 5.7 booted off the virtual CD-ROM attached to the iLO and installed without a problem. Running on the xen kernel killed the ethernet port but installing kmod-tg3-xen from ELRepo fixed that. One `yum update` later and it's on 5.8 and so far, everything seems to work.

Hey,

I have the same server and am also trying to install CentOS (either 5.8 or 6.2) neither are working. When I use the iLO I get to the point where its scanning the media and says its unable to find a valid source. The DVD is in the drive and I'm able to boot from it. When I boot from the DVD I'm able to get the installer going but when it comes time to partition the drive it cannot find any suitable drives.

My drives are 2 SAS 500gb drives configured via the B320i to a RAID1 array of about 465gb, the volume is created and set as a primary.

Is there anything you can do to help me? I've been at this for 2 days now and its quite urgent I get this machine up and running.

The difference is that my servers have a P420i not a B320i RAID controller. I suspect that the difference might be hardware vs FakeRAID :-(

guys normally all servers come with the install DVD or whatever they use to make an install wizard easy and HP do have them. i have no experience with this model but using it is really recommended.

I have just installed it with no problems. Its 32bit version of 5.8.

Mind you I didn't go via "Provisioning", I just booted the server from the Centos 5.8 DVD...

I am after something else though. I really need to use 5.5 instead of 5.8. And 5.5 just does not recognize p420i SMART Array controller :( , but 5.8 does. Can anybody suggest how I can supply 5.5 with drivers for p420i ?

Thanks,
Alex

5.8 is just 5.5 with security fixes.

Well, not quite....

I think they have added more drivers too, so more hardware gets recognised. For instance, 5.5 says that it has found Unknown type of HP SMART Array Controller :(

Yes, hardware support is added which is precisely why you need to use 5.8... well leaving aside the few hundred CVE's that have been fixed in the intervening 2 years between the two releases. 5.5 is not safe to use, don't do it.
