Hi
I am on the verge of buying a system with the following:-
INTEL LGA 2011 PROCESSORS
Intel Core i7 Processor i7-3930K 3.2GHz 12MB SIX CORE
SOCKET 2011 MOTHERBOARDS
ASRock X79 EXTREME4-M LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
DDR3 RAM
With 32GB I plan on loading up 6 VMs (Virtual Box probably on it)
I am wondering if anyone is running Centos 5.6 on this M/B, chipset without undue issues arising.
Thanks

Recommendation for Hardware
My own rule of thumb is to make sure that the network card is an Intel one as that seems to stand more chance of being supported sometime this decade.
Also, no reason to use CentOS 5.6 as 5.8 is newer and contains much better hardware support for newer hardware - and yours certainly qualifies as that. Any reason why you're not going to use CentOS 6 instead?

Re: Recommendation for Hardware
Thanks re Intel NIC
No I can use 5.8 - just assumed 5.6 would be more stable.

Re: Recommendation for Hardware
No, 5.6 is more hackable :-) And has less hardware support so really no reason to not use 5.8 if you can. And 6.3 has more hardware support than either.
However, if you're fixed on CentOS 5 then this post should move to the CentOS 5 section and you might get more replies.

Re: Recommendation for Hardware
No I am convinced, thanks. I'll go with 5.8
I switched hardware to:-
Intel Core i7 Processor i7-2600 3.4GHz 8MB QUAD CORE
INTEL STANDARD PROCESSOR COOLING FAN
ASRock H61M/U3S3 LGA1155/ Intel H61/ DDR3/ SATA3&USB3.0/ A&V&GbE/ MATX Motherboard
32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1333MHz (PC3 10600) Dual / Quad Channel
SEAGATE / WD 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB CACHE SATA 6.0Gb/s
2nd SEAGATE / WD 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB CACHE SATA 6.0Gb/s <--reckoned I'd do software mirrror
+ the usual
Not bad for $800 :-)
I'll report back if any issues in case anyone else uses this

Re: Recommendation for Hardware
Just spotted that you have an Intel Sandy Bridge based video solution in that lot and I think you might have problems with that on CentOS 5. Not entirely sure it's particularly straight forward on CentOS 6 either but at least it's been known to work there! Rather depends on whether you intend to run a GUI on it or not.
Re: Recommendation for Hardware
Hi easycoder,
nice hardware selection.
if you get the 32GB ram then you might consider using a xenserver or some others. Also if you plan to use the new Hardware hard think of using some old PC with openfiler to get external storage mirror etc.
PS i wish i could have that hardware right now :D
