Suggestion on good Linux server computer

Post by shuhei » 2012/12/22 18:06:13

Hello! I am thinking to buy a server computer for Linux. Is there anyone who can suggest me on good server computer for Linux operation system?

It seems like there are the whole bunch of troubles such as network card which does not come with driver for linux. So I need some input choosing server computer for Linux.

I heard from an clerk in computer shop that old computer can go with Linux pretty good. Considering the reason why Linux lost OS war against windows, there should be manufacture-built-in software that interfere with Linux sometimes, I surmise, which is why I decide to get input from Linux specialists from this site.

Also, please someone tell me the best ISP in this world. My computer connects with a computer acting as router because the whole apartment contracts with ISP and I think the administrator of my WAN operating network in managed mode blocks my 2 laptop to connect each other remotely partly because of economic reasons like making people buy Lan cable to connect 2 computer in the same network in order to maintain Lan cable industry. So I do not mind buying LAN cable but I would like to try out the taste of remote connection.
I will buy 1 Lan cable if I get nice ISP and connects me to the internet. you know, I can act as a network administrator if I have direct connection to the Internet.

Please!

A good server ...
* For what use?
* What is the budget?
* Why do you ask in CentOS 5 Forum? How about CentOS 6?

Almost anything works fine. Pick one. Do a websearch with its components to see how many users have had problems. If the result looks bad, pick another. Rinse and repeat.

THank you for the reply. The server is to make FTP, Web, Mail, and DNS server. I am right now asking IBM what server is good for making those servers for the first time.
The budget is lookin around 1000 dollars to 1500 dollars. I have tried to download ISO image of CentOS6 but all of them are corrupted. That happened 3 tiems.
So I have given up and decided to buy centOS bible 5.3 with install cd which I could easily found on the web.
I went to the mirror site from download from this page.But I could not get a working ISO image. could you suggest a link where to download good Linux 6?
If I can, I would like to upgrade my CentOS.

Why 5.3 rather than 6.x Also, if using 5.x for whatever reason, try to get the latest, 5.5 or 5.6, I've forgotten.

You can try downloading from mirrors.kernel.org, which usually works well for me, but it depends upon connection and location of course.

As for installation, you might try with the minimal install. Anaconda is a very fragile installer, and if one package isn't right, the entire installation fails. So, the fewer packages you try to install, the better the chance that it will work.

Are you in .jp ? You can find CentOS mirrors here. I hear riken is a reliable site. The iso files for CentOS 6 can be found at http://ftp.riken.jp/Linux/centos/6/isos/ .

Please be aware that CentOS 5.3 is severely out of date and is no longer supported. However once you have a working Internet connection you will be able to update your system to the current supported version, CentOS 5.8.

From this suggestion I was given when I asked about my AR242x driver, I had upgraded my linux to 5.8. and was able to just modprobe ath5k to install driver thank you.

I am thinking to upgrade it to 6.3. I appreciate the help.
