When I do type #nmcli d
Getting the following error:
Error: NetworkManager is not running.
What to do?

On CentOS 5 you probably don't want to use NetworkManager anyway as it was pretty dumb in that version. If your desire is to see a list of the network interfaces then just run ifconfig -a
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
