[CentOS 5.4][x86_64] Peculiar crash while running service

Post by sayan-chaliha » 2010/02/04 11:54:22

Hi,

I am a developer, and I have been using CentOS as the 64-bit build environment for quite some time now.

Recently, after release of 5.4, several users who upgraded to 5.4 reported crashes in my software, with no additional log information available.

To maintain backward compatibility with older systems, I use the following config to build:
-- GCC v3.2
-- CentOS 4 x86_64
-- packages are distributed using rpm-build

The software is a service daemon which monitors MySQL servers. Upto CentOS 5.3 it works absolutely fine. But in CentOS 5.4, it crashes. I created a build with debug symbols and created several crash-dumps to analyze the issue. All the crash-dumps pointed to one statement:
unsigned char *ptr = NULL;
GDB indicates that the system could not allocate memory to store 'ptr' (its not because the pointer was accessed without being initialized!). I was very baffled! Have you had any other issues such as this?

Welcome to the CentOS fora.

I'm only surprised you have not seen problems sooner. You should be building packages for CentOS 5.x on CentOS 5, not 4. A lot of things have changed. You might be OK building for the older release with compat-gcc-34 and , but are probably better building "native" on each release. You might also want to look at mock.

@pschaff:

Thanks a lot! That was all the information I needed.

Could you also tell me if every version of CentOS corresponds to a version of RHEL? For example, is CentOS 5.2 similar to RHEL 5.2 in terms of kernel version, basic architecture etc....

You are welcome. Glad it helped.

There is an exact correspondence between CentOS-5.x and RHEL5 Update-x, except as noted in each set of Release Notes and any optional updated packages on may choose to add from CentOSplus or other sources, or in general CentOS-n.x and RHELn Update-x.
