[SOLVED] centOS - server package issue

Post by shamun » 2010/02/08 21:23:51

In my i686 server

Present package query status:
=======================
[root@www etc]# yum list phpmyadmin
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
* addons: ftp.belnet.be
* base: ftp.belnet.be
* extras: ftp.belnet.be
* updates: ftp.belnet.be
Error: No matching Packages to list

[root@www etc]# yum list mysql mysql-server php phpmyadmin dovecot postfix postfixadmin
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
* addons: ftp.belnet.be
* base: ftp.belnet.be
* extras: ftp.belnet.be
* updates: ftp.belnet.be
Available Packages
dovecot.x86_64 1.0.7-7.el5 base
mysql.i386 5.0.77-4.el5_4.1 updates
mysql.x86_64 5.0.77-4.el5_4.1 updates
mysql-server.x86_64 5.0.77-4.el5_4.1 updates
php.x86_64 5.1.6-24.el5_4.5 updates
postfix.x86_64 2:2.3.3-2.1.el5_2 base
[root@www etc]#

1. i686 i got 8gb ram to be used.
2. i386 collection Vs i686 collection is huge differences
- mysql version: 5.0.90 vs 5.1.43
- php version: 5.2.12 vs 5.3.1
- dovecot version: re-compile dovecot-1.2.10 src.rpm VS 1.0.7xx

3. Huge version difference, as a coder, i believe at-least 1 line of code change can make a software release perfect big changes regarding performence + stability,
are those mirrors of centOS following updates and putting latest releases, on time, just a query? Or is there a hidden url that we should be manually changing to get most recent releases using yum?

Thanks in advance
Shamun

Are you aware of TUV's policy of backporting security and bug fixes?

Please don't go by the version number alone, always check the package change log.
rpm -q --changelog package_name
To answer your question, yes, the CentOS repositories are up to date and provide the binary equivalent of TUV's packages.

Thanks for this information. Now i know it.

I would also like to attach another packaging question on it. Yesterday i was installing a package so called vsftpd which shift with centOS.

[root@www etc]# yum list proftpd
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
* addons: ftp.belnet.be
* base: ftp.belnet.be
* extras: ftp.belnet.be
* updates: ftp.belnet.be
Error: No matching Packages to list

[root@www shamun]# yum list vsftpd
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
* addons: ftp.belnet.be
* base: ftp.belnet.be
* extras: ftp.belnet.be
* updates: ftp.belnet.be
Installed Packages
vsftpd.x86_64 2.0.5-16.el5_4.1 installed

[Be careful] - installing recommend packages?
===============================
I wanted to install proftpd only, because it worked for me. But in centOS 5, yum zone as u can see i don't have it, so i want to give vsftpd a try, After installation, till then things went perfect in front face, back end i still don't know it crashed ssh access, wake up from sleep, trying to work in server, day after installation, today completely no more access to the server using ssh nor ftp. I am so scared of packaging now, that i cant explain you in words.

Symptoms Screen shot:
===============
ssh fail:
ftp fail:

[SOLVED] centOS - server package issue

Do you have physical access to the server? Or is it in a remote location? From what you are trying to do, I suspect you do not have access to the console. Is this the case?

Impossible to know exactly what may have gone wrong, but vsftpd should have nothing to do with ssh. A command-line ftp session would be more useful for debugging purposes.

Some of your comments ("- dovecot version: re-compile dovecot-1.2.10 src.rpm VS 1.0.7xx") seem to indicate that you may be doing Source Installs which are highly discouraged, and can certainly cause breakage.

If you do want proftpd it is available from the RPMforge repo, but then you should know that - https://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=24619&forum=44&post_id=98234#forumpost98234 - anyway, here it is again:
# yum --disablerepo \* --enablerepo rpmforge info proftpd
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, priorities
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
* rpmforge: www.mirrorservice.org
Excluding Packages from Red Hat Enterprise 5 - RPMforge.net - dag
Finished
Available Packages
Name : proftpd
Arch : i386
Version : 1.3.2
Release : 1.el5.rf
Size : 1.9 M
Repo : rpmforge
Summary : Flexible, stable and highly-configurable FTP server
URL : http://www.proftpd.org/
License : GPL
Description: ProFTPD is an enhanced FTP server with a focus toward simplicity, security,
: and ease of configuration. It features a very Apache-like configuration
: syntax, and a highly customizable server infrastructure, including support for
: multiple 'virtual' FTP servers, anonymous FTP, and permission-based directory
: visibility.
:
: This package defaults to the standalone behaviour of ProFTPD, but all the
: needed scripts to have it run by xinetd instead are included.

Another point of clarification - in Post #1 you seem to be referring to i686 (32-bit) as if it were 64-bit. I believe you mean i386 versus x86_64. You may want to read FAQ#22

Thanks to all of you. i just print all of it, because tomorrow onsite i have to install it, i dont have any access to the server as you can see in the screen shot,
server is in colocation. And if ssh gets up, tomorrow i can do the rest packages to be intalled remotely again (i will try this time to avoid source code recompile, very risky in my case and in i686 machine).

normal ssh to crashed ssh login fail:
=======================
[root@shamun ~]# uname -a
Linux shamun.freeip.org 2.6.31.9-174.fc12.i686 #1 SMP Mon Dec 21 06:24:20 UTC 200 9 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

# ssh server is running, to test i inserted twice wrong password, after correct password, it says closed by remote host
[root@shamun ~]# ssh 91.xx.xxx.xx
root@91.xx.xx.xx's password:
Permission denied, please try again.
root@91.xx.xx.xx's password:
Permission denied, please try again.
root@91.xx.xx.xx's password:
Connection to 91.xx.xx.xx closed by remote host.
Connection to 91.xx.xx.xx closed.

What you have shown us is not a CentOS 5 kernel but one that appears to have originated from Fedora 12.

I wonder how much of your server is actually true CentOS?

Please see the following articles:

When CentOS Is Not CentOS
Broken Virtual Server
Other Voices

If your situation is that of the above, we really cannot help you -- as any suggestion that we may make could make your problems worse.
You should really talk to your server provider / hosting company and show them this forum thread.

@AlanBartlett: i read that article i am not on any of those categories yet, i want to be respecting pure centOS shifted packages, if i am not, i will force myself to use that recommended by centos , thats my private laptop, for testing and work, here is the server details.

[shamun@www ~]$ uname -a
Linux www.iam_not_giving_it_for_privacy.be 2.6.18-164.el5 #1 SMP Thu Sep 3 03:28:30 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

* my private use f12 or centos 5.4 on i386, here in forums i am only for centos 5.4 on x86_64, anyway its just to inform you.

1. First of all, a good news, i got pure hacked, i don't know why a hacker selected me a poor little technician? All those vsftpd problems seems a hacker issue, so i am very upset, i completely now lost su - , root access, because in 3 minutes wergis.com, changed my root password. Its a nightmare for me.

root pts/0 wergis.com Wed Feb 10 20:13 - 20:17 (00:03)
root pts/0 static.142.12.46 Wed Feb 10 20:02 - 20:03 (00:00)

2. So i have another username, using that still now i have access. i dont have access to my own server as root anymore.
[shamun@www ~]$ ssh root@localhost
warning: Need basic cursor movement capability, using vt100
root's password:
root's password:
root's password:
warning: Authentication failed.
Disconnected; no more authentication methods available (No further authentication methods available.).

[shamun@www ~]$ ifconfig -a
-bash: ifconfig: command not found
[shamun@www ~]$ su -
Password:
su: incorrect password
[shamun@www log]$ tail -100 messages
tail: cannot open `messages' for reading: Permission denied
[shamun@www log]$

Do i have to resintall whole centos 5.4 now back??? my all setup again? can i not do anything now? I can't belive it

The first thing you must do is to take that server off-line, quickly.

If you do not have root access, there is only one thing you can do . . . at the system console, having logged in as an ordinary user, issue a succession of sync commands (three is a good number) and press the power button. Harsh, crude and dramatic.

Now insert the install media into the optical drive and allow it to boot. From the on-screen boot: prompt select rescue mode. Now see how much of your data you can salvage. Once you have made your initial assessment and taken any salvage action that is possible, perform a fresh installation.

That is the only sure way to be free of the pestilence. :-x

Sorry. :-(

Thanks a lot, we close this, its [solve].

Summary of 3 steps i took:
======================
1. First i used medusa, lan port to wan port, using cross cable, i cant wait 1 month to crack it, so i stoped
- not safe, not better solution
2. on site, logged in as root using system recovery, grub
- procedure 2, not safe
- to create a justice report, noted all last login/activities
- noted what he applied perl/bash/etc
- backup most important not linked with any exploits

3. No second chance, already got experience, system reinstalled completely
- procedure 3, finally applied
- password apply with most largest and strongest, ports are changed, iptables more restriction applied
