Applications Keep Suddenly Closing

Post by mat-wright » 2010/02/13 15:30:24

Hi

I'm hoping someone might be able to help out with this issue.

I have recently switched my workstation over to Centos 5.3, I was previously working
on Fedora.

I have installed the 64 bit version. I am working on a reasonably powerful pc 12G memory, Intel P7 920, NVIDIA Quadro graphics card.

I am finding that applications are suddenly closing. This has happened several times with Firefox and Zend Studio.

I have been looking at the logs at /var/log/messages and the only clue I could find was npviewer.bin seemed to be throwing lots of errors.
I have removed npviewer from the system (its a wrapper that firefox uses for flash I believe).

The problem remains, as I'm working on Zend Studio it can just suddenly close without any warning.

Has anyone else experienced this ?

I have again looked at the message logs and there are no entries at all that correspond with the times that this is happening.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the CentOS fora.

Might want to read http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/PluginsFor64BitFirefox

One should not install obsolete releases with known bugs and security issues. The current release is, and has been for quite some time, 5.4. An update following the CentOS 5.4 Release Notes section 4 is highly recommended. If that doesn't help come back and ask again.

Yes I meant 5.4 (I had used a 5.3 DVD but updated via yum straight away) The problem persists.

The main desktop applications I am using are Firefox and ZendStudio.

Both of these applications periodically close completely, as if the process was killed.

There are no mentions in any logs, either for the applications nor var/log/messages

I suspect this is related to java.

I have noticed that just before the application closes that the CPU is totally saturated by the java process.

I was previously using ZendStudio on 64 bit Fedora without any issues so I am assuming that this is a problem
with 64bit Centos and Java.

Unfortunately I cannot risk losing any more time and am now seriously considering switching back to fedora 64 bit.

And advice would be appreciated.

Thats why I use Opera.
My firefox-3.0.12-1.el5.centos or, firefox-3.0.16-1.el5.centos both crashes frequently.
Esp, after opening 3/4 .

So, rather posting any thread I switched to Opera.
Also, Opera has an option "Reload Every" to reload any page after specific period.
Which is good for browsing this forum. 8-)

ZendStudio is a commercial package so using their support seems appropriate. I find both 32 and 64-bit Firefox to be very stable. What version of Java are you using? What plugins have you installed? Is your home directory a hold-over from Fedora or did you start fresh?

I started a fresh. I believe the problem is related to the nvidia drivers.

Please take a look at the kernel independent, kABI tracking kmod-nvidia package that is available from the ELRepo Project.
