Performance hit with over 2gb ram

If this has already been asked and addressed, my google-fu must be weak and I apologize.

My company does dedicated hosting. Recently we switched to the i5/i7 chips and Intel motherboards and Dual Channel DDR3. We have noticed a severe performance hit when we use x86_64 CentOS with over 2GB of RAM. The configurations vary, but here are some basics:

Motherboard:
Intel DP55WB
Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H
MSI H55M-E33
ASUS P7H55M-PRO

Processor:
i5-750
i7-860

Memory:
DDR3 - variety of makers, 1x2GB stick in Single Channel Mode, or 2x2GB sticks in Dual Channel Mode
Mushkin
Kinston
OCZ

Used for testing:
Unixbench 5.1.2

We have tested on the above hardware in a variety of configurations, and the results are identical each time. With 2GB of memory on a clean installation of CentOS 5.4 we get fantastic results on the Unixbench tests, average results for all 8 threads (quad core, hyperthreaded) well over 4000. As soon as a second 2GB stick is put in the performance average drops to under 900, every time, regardless of the hardware setup.

One test was done with a single 4GB stick, with the same performance challenges.

I have also tested the configurations with an Ubuntu 64bit install, and they all perform at over 4000 for i5s, and over 5000 for i7s.

I believe this is a kernel issue, as CentOS is still using 2.6.18, and Ubuntu is using 2.6.31.

Does anyone have any insight on this issue?

Maybe not a direct answer to your question, however there are some things I'd like to point out.

First, I honestly don't see how kernel could be the issue here. Although the version is in fact 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5, that doesn't make it obsolete, it's just a subject of security and bug fix backporting.

As you can see, this kernel has (reasonably) only been deprived of newest features, but on the other hand security and bug fixes were applied.

Second, you said you're pairing RAM modules from different manufacturers, which is known to cause unpredictable behavior. Two paired modules should always come from same manufacturer, have equal amount of RAM, operate at same frequency...

Welcome to the CentOS fora.

Hate to disagree with [b] milosb[/b] but does seem to me like it could be a kernel issue; however, my googling also failed to turn up a definitive answer. Are you running the latest kernel? Standard or Xen? Please show[code]uname -rmi[/code]

Might want to try the real-time kernels [url=https://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=25063&forum=37&post_id=100604#forumpost100604]toracat offers[/url] to test the theory.

Like a good peace-keeper, I will tread the middle ground.

I would be interested in knowing the results for the [i]standard[/i] 64-bit kernel (not [i]xen[/i]) when you use [i]identical[/i] RAM banks (make and size) in your tests, please.

Also, is the mobo BIOS up to date and correctly configured?

This may have been unclear, what we meant to convey was that we tested paired modules (e.g. two sticks of Kingston or two sticks of Mushkin, not one stick of Kingston one stick of Mushkin) from each of the following brands (Mushkin, OCZ, Kingston) and had the same issue.

All of the motherboards are using the latest released BIOS and factory default BIOS settings.

Sounds good. It would still be interesting to see the results of a real-time kernel, as suggested in post #3.

I tried installing (wget, rpm -ivh) and booting http://centos.toracat.org/kernel/centos5/realtime/x86_64/kernel-rt-2.6.24.7-146.ay.x86_64.rpm but got a kernel panic (root not found) when trying to boot it.
