yum update Fails

Post by TheGNUGuy » 2010/03/04 16:21:18

Hey everyone,

I am trying to update all the packages on my server, but when I enter the command yum update i get the following:

Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
* addons: centos.mirrors.tds.net
* base: mirrors.tummy.com
* extras: centos.mirror.nac.net
* updates: mirrors.gigenet.com
Error: unsupported file format

I have tried yum update, yum update all, yum update yum, and yum update svn. All of these fail with the same error. I have also tried yum makecache but that didn't solve anything.

Is there a way to fix this?

Thanks for the help!

Start with "yum clean all" then provide the output of "yum -d 10 update yum" if it fails.

This is the output with plugins enabled:

Loading "fastestmirror" plugin
Config time: 0.040
Running "init" handler for "fastestmirror" plugin
Yum Version: 3.2.22
COMMAND: yum -d 10 update yum
Installroot: /
Ext Commands:

yum
Setting up Package Sacks
Running "postreposetup" handler for "fastestmirror" plugin
Determining fastest mirrors
* addons: holmes.umflint.edu
* base: yum.singlehop.com
* extras: holmes.umflint.edu
* updates: hpc.arc.georgetown.edu

This is the output with plugins disabled:

Config time: 0.036
Yum Version: 3.2.22
COMMAND: yum --noplugins -d 10 update yum
Installroot: /
Ext Commands:

yum
Setting up Package Sacks

it still says "Error: unsupported file format" at the end of each

Welcome to the CentOS fora. The following reading is recommended for new users:

Running the script getinfo_pkg.sh as described in the last link will give us relevant information to help with your question. Also, please show
cat /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo
Is there any proxy involved?

Might also try as root, and being very careful
cd /var/cache/yum
rm -fr *
cd
Hey everyone,

Sorry it took me so long to get back I got busy with school. :(

There are no proxies to worry about, I am connected through a router but I don't think that should be a problem.

Here is a link to the all the output pschaff asked me to post: http://pastebin.centos.org/32039

Thanks again for the help!!

I'm slow getting back also - busy with lots of things - but I'm afraid I don't see anything in the information you provided to explain the problems you are having. All I can suggest is to try commenting out all the mirrorlist' lines and uncommenting the baseurl= lines in /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo and trying again, starting with
yum clean all
yum update glibc\*
yum update
If that works, I'd try changing the mirror.centos.org site to a mirror near you.
