cdrom mount ->system freeze

Post by tenim » 2010/05/03 07:02:23

hello !

i have a problem with centos 5.4 64bit. if i try to mount a cd/dvd, the system freezes after few seconds.
no further action is possible, no mouse, keyboard -nothing. only a hard reset helps.
this appears under gnome with the automount feature(by inserting a medium) and with manually mounts
in a gnome shell (mount /dev/scd0 /mnt). in runlevel 3 the mount fails also, but the system doesn´t freeze.
in var/log/messages the following entries are made:

>May 2 19:46:32 mainframe pcscd: winscard.c:304:SCardConnect() Reader E-Gate 0 0 Not Found
>May 2 19:46:32 mainframe kernel: gdm-rh-security[3344]: segfault at 0000000000000000 rip 00002af26382819c rsp 00000000427c6eb0 error 4

this is confusing, because the install of the os was no problem. he mounted the dvd and installed the os properly.

my system:
* centos 5.4 64bit
* intel core 2 quad q9650
* asus p5e3 pro
* 8gb ram (kingston ddr3, 10666)

the cdrom drive is connected to the motherboard over an ide cable.

hope this infos help.

Whilst waiting for Phil to reply, I'll make a comment that I notice you are not running the latest kernel.

My advice is to update the kernel (yum update kernel\*) to the current version (which is 2.6.18-164-15.1.el5, as of the date of this post), re-boot the system and test again.

If you would like to see the changes made since the base 5.4 kernel that you are running, you can see the deltas of each successive change log here. Numbers 34 to 39 will be the ones relevant to your situation.

have updated my kernel to 2.6.18-164-15.1
after rebooting the same thing: mounting cdrom ->freeze.

now, i mount a .iso -image per loop to access the data. this works but is not comfortable.
