What Version of CentOS is on my VPS

Post by Greenerpastures » 2014/03/25 10:58:17

Hi everyone, am new here, and new to Linux, I have just opened a VPS account, and thought it would be a good thing to install nothing until I brought the operating system up to date.
On sign-up I selected CentOS, 6, my host did not give any further information on what version or release of 6.?? ,I chose 32 bit, in an attempt to keep memory usage as low as possible.
So, I logged in as root and issued the following command, uname -a ,which resulted in the following response.

[root@v01 ~]# uname -a
Linux v01.28147.vpscontrol.net 2.6.32-431.el6.i686 #1 SMP Fri Nov 22 00:26:36 UT C 2013 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
[root@v01 ~]#

My question is, how do I extract the exact version of CentOS that is supposed to be on my VPS from the above, it is not at all clear to me what version of CentOS I run, , or even if CentOS is on there at all, I have looked here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CentOS , but I really can not make the connection as to what os my host has installed.

Any advise would be much appreciated, thank you all in advance, I hope too that this is not posted in an inappropriate place, regards to all.

That kernel is the original that shipped with CentOS 6.5. There have been a few updates since then so it's worth running `yum update` and you should get 2.6.32-431.5.1.el6

Try `rpm -q centos-release` and the answer should contain centos-release-6-5 as the first part of the output

Hi, thank you for your reply,

when I typed this, rpm -q centos-release
[root@v01 ~]# rpm -q centos-release
centos-release-6-5.el6.centos.11.2.i686
[root@v01 ~]#

I also typed this, cat /etc/redhat-release, and got the following response, does this mean I am completely up to date, if not, could you tell me the commands required to search for and update via a terminal/ ssh.

Last login: Tue Mar 25 12:58:47 2014 from 95.83.253.52
[root@v01 ~]# cat /etc/redhat-release
CentOS release 6.5 (Final)
[root@v01 ~]#

Am I up to date?, if not how do I go about updating with yum, and what are the packages yum installs, are they rpm's, are rpm's the correct type to use with CentOS.

The output you posted originally shows your kernel is not up to date. You just become root and run `yum update` to update. If the kernel or glibc are updated then you need to reboot to have that update take effect but other packages might require the service affected to be restarted instead.

Thank you TrevorH

I will run yum update, I understand that a reboot may be required, and in doing so I assume any packages that may require a restart will do so as a result of the reboot,
and as such will not require I find them an restart them one by one.

Update, I just typed this command into putty, su -c 'yum update'

and received the following output, which I hope is ok to post here, it may be of some benefit to someone new to Linux and CentOs ,like I am.
As there are no errors shown, I take it this update was a success, may be someone will confirm this, or should I reboot before considering this process to be successful.
I should mention I have as of yet nothing installed on my vps, so at least I have nothing to loose as a result of this update.

And for anyone who does not want to read the entire process below, I have just rebooted my vps, and from the looks of things all went to plan,
you will see from the next two paragraphs, there is a change in version number after the reboot.

THIS WAS THE VERSION INFORMATION PRIOR TO ISSUING THE YUM UPDATE COMMAND:- su -c 'yum update' WHICH DID INCLUDE THE (') WHERE THEY SHOW.

[root@v01 ~]# uname -a
Linux v01.28147.vpscontrol.net 2.6.32-431.el6.i686 #1 SMP Fri Nov 22 00:26:36 UTC 2013 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
[root@v01 ~]# ^C
[root@v01 ~]#
Broadcast message from root@v01.28147.vpscontrol.net
(unknown) at 15:35 ...

THIS WAS THE VERSION INFORMATION AFTER UPDATING AND REBOOTING.

The system is going down for power off NOW!

So I guess I've answered my own question as to whether or not the yum update was successfull. :D

THE UPDATE PROCESS is listed below for anyone who wishes to see the process.

Re: What Version of CentOS is on my VPS

If you use yum from the command line then you will not be told if an update requires a reboot although there is a `needs-restarting` script that can tell you what needs restarting to pick up updates. If it lists important processes like init then a reboot is needed and I don't think it would tell you about a kernel update either. I believe some of the GUI update tools will notify you if a reboot is required but since I don't use any of them I don't know that for sure.

You might want to sign up to the centos-annouce mailing list as notifications for all updates are sent out there and include a classification of "critical", "important", "moderate" etc in the subject of the mail. Once you are subscribed, it's possible to logon to the web site and amend your preferences to receive only updates for e.g CentOS 6 or CentOS 5.
CentOS 5 died in March 2017 - migrate NOW!
