Serv-U FTP Server Program Clone?

Group,

I was wondering if anyone here knows of a program that functions very close to how Serv-U FTP server by Rhinosoft does but works with Cent OS?

Serv-U works only on Windows and they say they have no plans to offer it for Unix/Linux anytime soon.

I love the user control I have with Serv-U and so far I have not found any stock ftp server programs in Cent OS that can even come close to the administrator and user control that I have with Serv-U.

Anyone know of anything that is better than what comes with Cent OS?

Thanks much

Doug

There must be at least one person here that knows of at least one program that is even slightly close to what I am looking for.

Any help or information on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have never used 'Serv U FTP' I can say that vsftpd and proftpd are both excellent FTP apps. If you are looking for simplified interaction with either of those, you probably won't get anything easier than using Webmin to admin these servers.

Webmin has modules specific to those two apps and the user interaction, in my two cent opinion, is about the easiest, most new to Linux user friendly method around.

Actually, No I am not looking for something simpler but actually more complex and precision control (than webmin, webmin is TOO simplified). I am looking for a program just like Serv-U that gives me the control over my users like thier program does. Guys check out the Serv-U website at this following url of http://www.serv-u.com/ and download the trial version and play around with it for awhile. They give you a 30 day fee trial period. It would be awesome to see this written to work on a Unix/Linux platform. Ever since I bought a copy of the program back a few years ago I fell in love with it and have not seen a better ftp server program yet.

I don't know. I would need to install Windows to test that and I can't personally afford it.

just another reason I use Linux.

If you want total granular control over your FTP in Linux, you can always go directly to the config file. That's where all the action happens. if your looking for more complex that is.

Wish I could help you more than that. Good luck in your search.

I wasnt saying to go out and purchase a copy, you dont have to pay for it to test it. They give you a free trial for 30 days, plenty of time to test the program. Also, you dont have a computer with windows on it, surprising to hear, but thats another subject that we wont get into. As far as the config file method, that sounds like alot of work and a learning curve for me. I have a server admin who does all the server management for me so going that route is above my head.

Oh well, If anyone ever comes across a program that works like Serv-U but can be installed into Cent OS please let me know as I would be interested in checking it out for possible use on my server.

Thanks much,

Doug

I recommend Wing FTP Server, it is very powerful and it does everything what you need.

You may also try `pure-ftpd` + `pureadmin` or `pure-ftpd` + `usermanager`.
Its GUI not so rich as in Wing FTP, but it is better than nothing, if you want to use GUI.

Personally, I use `pure-ftpd` for the years without GUI (some console utilities comes with it) and with SQL-backend to store all ftp user's settings. It's very simple and pactical.
There is no any advantage to have GUI, if you have logs and utilities to watch user activity at real time. But it only in my opinion.

I just heard via Serv-U's mailing list that they actually have developed a Linux build of Serv-U, and it's up for public beta at serv-u.com/beta. It's pretty neat, from what I can tell they're still using the same engine and core, just porting some bare-minimum OS-specific stuff. It's free to run for the beta period, so if anyone here's still looking this, go give it a look! I ran it on Fedora 14 but they claim to have tested it successfully on Ubuntu 10.10, Linux Mint, Amazon's EC2 base image, and some others.

I am happy to confirm that Serv-U is in fact supported on CentOS as of version 11. All interfaces, including the FTP, FTPS, SFTP and web transfer interfaces, are available on Linux.

Installation instructions for Serv-U on Linux can be found here:
