Media test always fails

Post by kAlvaro » 2005/03/04 20:09:10

The built-in media test always fails for CDs 1 and 3 (CD 4 passes the test and I still haven't downloaded CD 2). I've recorded the ISO twice and tested it in two different computers. According to md5sum the ISO files have been downloaded correctly.

I've burnt the CDs under Windows with Nero 5: File-> Burn image and default options.

Is there any known problem with these ISO images? Do I need to adjust some Nero settings? Has my CD recorder just died?

I have found similar problems, although not applicable to your specific problem, with other cds I had burnt. They read erratically. The best I can tell the cheaper the burner and the cheaper the cd reader the more likely the problem.

I now buy only name brand burners and now if I find this kind of problem I dump the reader and get a new one.

Probably name brand burners and readers would be the answer. But generally they cost more. Cheap name brands at slower speeds can be had for low prices, but you give up the speed.

I have also found erratic results with cds -- sometimes the entire package of cds are 'bad'.

Your milage may vary.

I am experiencing the same problems now.

The CentOS 4.0 iso's #1 and #3 are always corrupt (http://www.reloumirrors.net), after downloading twice and burning three times. Some packages cannot be opened with installing.

The 3.4 server iso is fine. I have burned the iso to check.

This is really the first time that corrupt iso's appear on this large scale. Can't it be a problem with the iso's?

I have also downloaded ISOs via HTTP three times and failed to burn CD's everytime.

There are a lot of others with same/similar problems messages on the maillist

Here are some further suggestions to try

1) Use BitTorrent instead of HTTP
2) Wait for all 4 ISO's to complete BitTorrenting before burning any of them
3) Double check MD5SUMs with ISOBuster before burning
4) Initiallly burn to CDRW instead of CDR to reduce toast created
5) Boot with linux ide=nodma
6) Always do a media test before installing

(PS I've been testing using a Pentium III 500M)

CentOS 3.4 was amazing - lets hope 4.0 is just as impressive if/when I can get it to work !

After changing the cdrom in the server, all disks turn out 'pass'. So, the iso's are good.

Seems to a problem with the 1999 PHILIPS 4x4x24 cd burner I had put in my PIII HP Vectra VE.
Red Hat 8 installs perfectly but CentOS 4 keeps saying there are corrupt files.

I have now replaced the cdrw with a LG 52x24x52 and install has gone perfectly.
