[SOLVED] How to install nVidia driver on CentOS 4.8?

Post by JeromeWu » 2011/03/31 16:05:02

Dear all:

I have a question regarding nVidia GT 220 chip on CentOS 4.8 which need your kind help.

I am new to CentOS and am working to make my nVidia GT 220 card to work on CentOS 4.8 64 bit.
I downloaded the driver from nVidia (ver 260.19.44) and followed its instruction for automatic installation.
However, after reboot, the system simply showed a window saying the new hardware (nVidia unknown) doesn't work and jump the display setting back to VESA. I tried to manually setup the video card chip using system setting but there was no option for GT 220.

Does anyone know how to correctly install the nVidia driver on CentOS 4.8 64 bit? Did I use the proper driver for it?

Thanks for your kind help!

best,
Jerome

This one should work:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-amd64-260.19.44-driver.html

Hello foxb:

Thanks a lot!

I used the exact driver you mentioned and followed the automatic installation procedures on nVidia website. However, it doesn't work (due to some reason I don't know) and the X display setting jumped back to VESA. So, I can only use 1280x1024 on my 1920x1200 lcd panel (all texts are stretched).

Does anyone know where I might need to check? Does anyone ever succeed in installing driver from nVidia on CentOS 4.8? Thanks!

Jerome

I did in a past, but Upgraded to CentOS 5 -> No CentOS 4.x for testing

Google showed up this one:
