URL times-out

Welcome to the CentOS fora. Reading FAQ & Readme First is recommended for new users.

No idea what the matter may be. Works for me. Do you have a proxy server? What does
dig mirror.centos.org
return?

The standard repo configuration uses mirrorlist and not the baseurl of the primary server, which is meant as a source for the mirrors. See the standard /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base .repo.

I can ping that numeric IP address, or connect via lftp, but not resolve a hostname for it. In my location "host mirror.centos.org" rotates among several IPs.
$ lftp http://87.239.158.226/centos/4/updates/i386/repodata/
cd ok, cwd=/centos/4/updates/i386/repodata
lftp 87.239.158.226:/centos/4/updates/i386/repodata> dir
drwxr-xr-x -- ..
-rw-r--r-- 6.6M 2011-06-01 12:41 filelists.xml.gz
-rw-r--r-- 35M 2011-06-01 12:41 other.xml.gz
-rw-r--r-- 679K 2011-06-01 12:41 primary.xml.gz
-rw-r--r-- 951 2011-06-01 12:41 repomd.xml
lftp 87.239.158.226:/centos/4/updates/i386/repodata> exit
$ host 87.239.158.226
Host 226.158.239.87.in-addr.arpa. not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
$ host mirror.centos.org
mirror.centos.org has address 66.109.26.212
$ host mirror.centos.org
mirror.centos.org has address 69.167.139.9
$ host mirror.centos.org
mirror.centos.org has address 64.94.65.2
$ host mirror.centos.org
mirror.centos.org has address 64.94.65.2
$ host mirror.centos.org
mirror.centos.org has address 69.167.139.9
$ host mirror.centos.org
mirror.centos.org has address 69.72.242.210
$ host 69.72.242.210
210.242.72.69.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer server.cgorr.com.
I can only guess there was a problem with the mirror. If it still fails, perhaps try a different mirror by IP address.
