I'm a little confused here. What is your running kernel? Are you trying to rebuild the kernel against some earlier version of the kernel ??

In any event, you don't have to recompile the whole kernel. Try building a kernel module by following the instructions at:

http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/BuildingKernelModules

Method 1 is the easiest.

That is the only piece of clear information that I can follow from your posts. You say --

Right now there's a need to recompile a kernel.

Please explain why you feel "there's a need to recompile a kernel".

From the running system, please post the output returned by the following commands --
uname -rmi
rpm -qa kernel\* | sort
rpm -q centos-release
