ADSL USB modem SpeedTouch 330 on CentOS 330

Post by ioanp » 2007/02/27 03:12:45

I have a USB ADSL modem SpeedTouch 330 (Alcatel - Thomson) and I tried to connect my PC running CentOS 4.3 following the steps from so:

1.I downloaded the latest version of LIBATM and I patched it accordingly to recommendations, afterwards I built it by ./configure, make and make install.

tar xzf linux-atm-2.4.1.tar.gz &&
cd linux-atm-2.4.1 &&
patch -Np1 -i ../linux-atm-2.4.1-gcc-4.patch &&
./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc &&
make &&
su

2.I down loaded the modem firmware SpeedTouch330_firmware_3012.zip and as my device revision given by awk '/4061/ { print $5 }' /proc/bus/usb/devices is 4.0 I used ZZZ... to generate both speedtch-1.bin and speedtch-2.bin using the firmware extractor binary.

3.Created the 'secrets' file with the content '"username@isp" "*" "password"' and copied it into the directories /etc/ppp/chap-secrets and /etc/ppp/pap-secrets as I am not sure whether my ISP use PAP or CHAP.

4.I made an copy of the br2684ctl bridging utility and after that I compiled it with the command gcc -o br2684ctl brctl-010226.c -latm && I did su -
and I just “cp br2684ctl /usr/sbin “.

5.I created /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0 with the content from below:

PEERDNS=yes
TYPE=xDSL
DEVICE=ppp0
BOOTPROTO=dialup
PIDFILE=/var/run/pppoe-adsl.pid
BR2684DEV=0
CONNECT_POLL=6
CONNECT_TIMEOUT=300
SYNCHRONOUS=no
DEFROUTE=yes
LCP_INTERVAL=10
LCP_FAILURE=2
USER='username@isp'
VPI=vpi-number
VCI=vci-number
LINUX_PLUGIN=rp-pppoe.so

6.Finally:
cp speedtch-{1,2}.bin /lib/firmware
install -m400 ifcfg-ppp0 /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
install -m400 secrets /etc/ppp/chap-secrets
install -m400 secrets /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
install -m755 br2684ctl /usr/sbin
install -m644 libatm.so.1 /usr/lib

In spite of the fact that I followed exactly the above steps the PPP0 interface failed to come up by IFUP at the boot time even the connect timeout is 300 seconds. Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance,

Well after succeding with this, I returned to the office next monday (I have wifi connexion there), and at booting
"configuring ppp0" hangs de machine for 5 minutes until realizes there is no usb modem connected, then continue to gdm login.

Anyone knows how can I minimize this time?

Thanks in advance.
