Wireless / ipw2200

Post by PeterMB » 2008/03/23 15:30:03

I've just installed CentOS 4.6 on a Thinkpad X41 and I'm trying to get the wireless network up and running using NetworkManager.

I've installed the ipw2200 driver.

dmesg | grep ipw2200 gives
ipw2200: Unknown parameter `'
ipw2200: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network Driver, git-1.0.10
ipw2200: Copyright(c) 2003-2005 Intel Corporation
ipw2200: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection

dmesg | grep ieee80211 gives
ieee80211_crypt: registered algorithm 'NULL'
ieee80211: 802.11 data/management/control stack, git-1.1.7
ieee80211: Copyright (C) 2004-2005 Intel Corporation

NetworkManager is up and running as a service, but there is no icon for it in the system tray and when I issue
su -c '/sbin/chkconfig --level 345 NetworkManagerDispatcher on'
I get
error reading information about service NetworkManagerDispatcher: No such file or directory

Can anyone gve any pointers on how to get this sorted? Am I using the wrong drivers?

Thanks
Peter

oops, I meant that I had installed the ipw2200 firmware, not the driver.

After trying to activate the wireless in Network Configuration and doing dmesg | grep ipw2200 again I get
ipw2200: Unknown parameter `'
ipw2200: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network Driver, git-1.0.10
ipw2200: Copyright(c) 2003-2005 Intel Corporation
ipw2200: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
ipw2200: Firmware error detected. Restarting.
ipw2200: Sysfs 'error' log captured.

lsmod | grep ipw2200 gives
ipw2200 103061 0
ieee80211 32777 1 ipw2200
- a googled page seems to say that this shows that the firmware isn't being loaded, and that there should be an entry for firmware_class - is this the problem?

Thanks
Peter

Thanks toracat, I followed the instructions on the CentOS wiki and reinstalled the firmware but no difference.

Service Configuration is also now reporting
Network Manager dead but pid file exists

How do I fix that?

Thanks
Peter
