Strange problem for network of my laptop

Post by sheepyang » 2008/10/23 15:13:19

My laptop is Acer Aspire 4520G. I install Centos 4.7 in it.
Several issues confuse me.
1. The wireless chip is Atheros AR5007EG. when execute lspci -v, this chip is recognized to "07:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)". I download latest version of madwifi and make/make install the driver. Ifconfig can not show the wireless card.
When restart the computer, the kudzu find new hardware, an Ethernet controller not a wireless.

2.A cable modem provides a dhcp. If the laptop connects the modem with a long wire(about 15m), the centos can not configure the IP when the computer start up but it is ok with a
short wire about 2m.
A more stranger phenomenon appears. If I use a router, model D-Link DI-624 connect to the cable modem and the laptop go internet through the router, some website such as
www.google.com, www.sina.com.cn, www.baidu.com can not be found but some website can be visited, for example centos.
What is the matter? The above issues can not appear in Windows XP.

3.When I hot-plug the network wire from the laptop terminal and change the mode from direct-to-modem to connect-to-router, the Centos OS can not find this change and the IP/DNS also preserves.

How to solve this problem?

There is no long wire issue with CentOS either.
If your 2M wire works, and your 15M doesn't, the 15M wire must have a problem.
It might be crossed, or have a reversed pair. This could cause auto sensing to take
longer, causing dhcp to fail.

Sorry! I have forgot saying another fact that is the 15m long wire will work well if it connect from the router to the laptop.

The problem then is with that wire, and whatever else you were connecting it to.
Your router may auto-sense while the other switch may not.
