IBM x3250 kernel panic with new kenel

Post by yyagol » 2008/10/05 23:21:56

Hi ,

Today i decided to update some of my CentOS servers with new updates
after a successful update , i reboot into the new kernel . the system start boot
and when udev service was coming up i got into kernel panic . this same problem
i got in 2 RHEL4 servers as well .
here are some details :
IBM x3250 processor Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU 3040 @ 1.86GHz , with 4G RAM
CentOS release 4.7 (Final)
kernel-smp-2.6.9-78.0.1.EL is the problematic one
udev-039-10.22.el4

if i boot into the old kernel then the server runs perfect . this problem is the same
with RedHat on the same hardware with this details :
Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 7)
kernel-smp-2.6.9-78.0.1.EL same kernel version
udev-039-10.22.el4 same udev version

i try to build a new initrd but the problem remains , on the same hardware CentOS 5 got no problems
with new kernel . i guess this is something inherited from RedHat spec .
any suggestions on how to attack this problem ?

I think you'll probably guess what I'm about to write . . .

As a temporary measure, put an exclude = kernel* line into your /etc/yum.conf file and set the default= line of your /etc/grub.conf file to boot the previous (know to work) kernel.

Next, check both Upstream's and our bug trackers, either logging this issue on both - if not already present - or adding a Me too - if present.

I don't think rebuilding the initrd would have helped, as the boot process had got to the udev init phase.

You could attempt a boot without the quiet kernel option and have a running video camera focused onto the monitor to capture all the output . . .

well thanks AlanJBartlett ,
already did menu.list and yum .conf , and i open a ticket with RedHat support
i was hoping to figure it out before they do , here is what i found with the two kernel config
[root@~]# diff --suppress-common-lines --side-by-side config-2.6.9-67.0.1.ELsmp config-2.6.9-78.0.1.ELsmp

i guess recompiling my own kernel without this aditian settings can solve the problem ,
i do want to update my kernels for security and bug fix .
as for reporting a bug , i want to collect all the details and make sure its a bug before reporting it.

I think you realise that I'm not a CentOS 4 user and, therefore, I don't have either the config files or the sources to hand.

Your idea of taking the -67.0.1.ELsmp configuration file and using it to build your own custom kernel from the -78.0.1.ELsmp sources is a good starting point.

(An aside: I had to look at your command line twice before I realised you were doing what I routinely do with a sdiff -s . . . :lol: )

Once you have collected sufficient details to open bug reports at BRC & BCO, please cross-reference them and also mention that you are a member of the CentOS community in your report at BRC. Mentioning the URL of this thread may also be helpful.

If you would please post the two bug reference numbers here, it will simplify matters for anyone else who may wish to monitor this (assumed) bug.

Another way of looking at this issue is to compare the change logs of those two kernels.

For example:
$ rpm -qp --changelog http://mirrors.dedipower.com/centos/4.6/updates/SRPMS/kernel-2.6.9-67.0.22.EL.src.rpm > clog-67.0.22
$ rpm -qp --changelog http://mirrors.dedipower.com/centos/4.7/updates/SRPMS/kernel-2.6.9-78.0.1.EL.src.rpm > clog-78.0.1
$ diff clog-78.0.1 clog-67.0.22 | more

I found a workaround this problem with kernel parameter acpi=off
the only problem now is that i cannot shutdown the server :)
i guess i can live with that as long as i get the latest security updates ill be fine
