setting up Virtualization on a centos 4

Post by wolfbuda » 2009/03/24 20:14:37

Hi there,
I searching for help to setting up Virtualization on a production centos 4 box, #uname -a: Linux myHost 2.6.9-78.0.13.plus.c4smp #1 SMP Tue Jan 20 22:29:27 EST 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

First I was thinking to set KVM but it needs a 2.6.20 kernel and I don’t know if it’s possible to install it on Centos 4

After that, I was trying to install Virtuabox but with no success. I tried with versions 1.6.6 and 2.14 but always with the same errors:

/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
Starting VirtualBox kernel module [FAILED]
(modprobe vboxdrv failed. Please use 'dmesg' to find out why)
dmesg
vboxdrv: command line.
vboxdrv: Trying to deactivate the NMI watchdog...
vboxdrv: Failed!
vboxdrv: NMI watchdog in IO_APIC mode active -- refused to load the kernel module!
vboxdrv: Please disable the NMI watchdog by specifying 'nmi_watchdog=0' at kernel
vboxdrv: command line.

I just need any type of virtualization on this box. Any help? Should I try vmware?
Thanks.

If you did that then you would no longer really have CentOS.

VirtualBox RPM for RHEL4 (does not actually say CentOS-4, unlike the RHEL-5 version) is only available for i386 and you are running x86_64, so no surprise that it does not work. From your error message and description it is not clear if you have installed from the RPM - the recommended approach.

That would be worth a try. Could also try one of the other options on the Virtualization link Gerald supplied. Any chance of moving the box to CentOS-5? Your options are better there.
