Dovecot imap is fine but POP3 can't connect

Post by richard_chapman » 2006/11/22 05:04:33

Hi.. I have a Cantos 4.4 installation and an using sendmail and dovecot.
I initially tried to use pop3 connections to dovecot from outlook - but couldn't. I tried imap connections - and they worked fine first time. I now have users who really want pop3 - but I still can't make it work. I have set up "unix user accounts" for them, and there is mail in the queue which they can access with outlook using imap. However any attempt to connect with pop3 using the same username and psssword gives the error:

"Outlook couldn't connect ot he incoming mail server (pop3). The problem could be your ssl or port settings for the incoming server. Verify your ssl and port settings...."

I have tried changing the outlook ssl settings but nothing changes. Dovecot setup doesn't seem to distinguish between pop3 and imap authentication - but I guess it must somehow.

Any ideas why imap aithentication is working but not pop3?

Have you modified the dovecot.conf file?

You need to add POP3 services to the items that dovecot listens for. I think that by default it listens for imap, but not POP3

Thanks Bill. You are right and I now have it working. I haven't received notification for this thread for some reason - so only just found your post. The comments at the top of the config file seem a bit confusing - and I was using webmin to configure dovecot. I had to "uncomment" the protocol line - and add pop3 and pop3s to the line to get it to work. The comments at the top said "you don;t need to uncomment" - but it seemed like I did
