setup http server on CentOS4

Post by dbyy » 2007/03/11 20:55:17

Hi Everyone,

I hope this is the correct forum for my question.

I installed CentOS4 few weeks ago and I'm trying now to complete the setup.
I have setup apache quite a few times in the past (always under WIN-XP) the manul way, edit http.conf.

Now I'm trying to setup apache for CentOS.
Initially i thought Apache would be installed out-of-the-box. I tried "http://localhost/index.html" usually the default apache page shows up.
not in my case.

Then opened the server setting for http server from the gnome menu and I verified the entries.
At this point, I can't discover what could be wrong (but I havent' used this tool before)

I read the system-admin-guide, but it just decribes the windows in the http server setup (not much additional hints and tips) :(

Maybe I should edit the http.conf files to get the server running.

I wonder whether there is somewhere another documentation with more details about HTTP server setup.

I'm a little bit frustrated because I setup XAMP a few times and also LAMP on Debian-sarge. And mostly the system was running after 1 hours.

Please hear my cry for help.

Any help is much appreciated.

TIA
Fred

btw. I'm on a intranet with 1 WIN-XP (192.168.0.100, Apache2, PHP4, mySQL 4.1.21) and 1 CentOS4 (192.168.0.1010) out of the box installation.

If the default page did not show up, it was not because of the .conf file. I would not modify that until at this point.
1. verify that httpd is installed (if you edited the .conf, it is) via "rpm -q httpd". Install via "yum install httpd" (or use a gui tool like yumex.
2. start httpd via "service httpd start" (or via the init.d script directly). There should just be an "OK"
3. connect to you box via http
4. examin /var/log/httpd/access_log and/or /var/log/httpd/error_log

thanks pj

I digg'ed little bit deeper and noticed that the http service wasn't started at system startup.
I fixed that and Apache is running now and I can see my default web page (var/www/html/index.html)

Thanks for your help,.

Cheers
Fred
